#4 EMAIL TO PAUL

I worked at AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) in Austin, TX at the time.  I was in the Facilities department and we designed and built the cleanrooms we made computer chips in.  We ran a very large chip factory.  Here is a link to a video of it.    I ran the CAD group (Computer Aided Design) and there were a number of very smart guys who did all the drawings for our design and construction efforts.  They were very computer and software savvy and were instrumental in why our Facilities group was so effective.  Two of these folks, Gene and Paul, supported me during my sabbatical and became a very useful back door of computer help when the science lab folks had computer problems.  I could email them and they knew how to dig into the software and make suggestions on why a computer or a program was not performing correctly.  The science folks were really appreciative that what they first thought of as a near useless newbie volunteer actually turned out to be helpful.  Not that I knew anything, but I knew who to email!

Paul and I both played soccer in the Austin public league.  He was good, I was a beginner, but we had a nice rivalry as our teams were both old established (and at times, dominant) Austin teams and had long standing competitive rivalry.

These are the same fields used for the wonderful Austin City Limits Music Festival that I LOVED attending each year.

Paul also came from a Navy family, dad a master Chief Petty Officer, brother a SEAL, etc and had served for many years.  So he had lots of boat and sea time and had lots to teach me and warn me about.   It's fun for me to review these inane communications and enjoy the tremendous camaraderie that we had in our work groups at AMD.  I could not have wished for a more collegiate, smart, witty and talented group to work with.

Many thanks for the vomiting advice, as i'm sure that would go over well
in the lab.  I'll continue to send travelodge to gene for distribution. Let
me know when he is on vacation and i'll switch to you if you're around.

Hope the soccer is going well, i'm not playing much right now!  ha ha

These boat guys already know about the hazing traditions and i've no idea
what we really have in store for us.

I've gotten several messages so everything seems to be working.  Just
slow cause we dump and retrieve email 3 times day and we're 6 hrs ahead of
you.

This whole thing is such a gas, read about it in my daily newsletter. Oh
yea, i copied myself so i would have a copy of all my musings, but with
my auto reply i don't want to eat up more email time. so could you arrange
for someone to save all these emails in a directory for me?

thanks and adios

david
