Already, the character development of the play is taking place.

There is Doug, the jolly chief scientist from USC, fifty fiveish, a wealth of historical information on research and techniques.  Always a grin on his face, a coach and cheerleader for his young  grad students.  


Michael, the fun loving but competent scientist for hire, back from a year
living in Italy "hanging out".  He is the prime organizational component,
setting schedules, working out water budgets from the sampling devices to
spread throughout the various experiments. Hip, young and smart,
the group looks to him for direction in both tactical questions on
who gets access to what samples, and the strategic questions of how many
samples to take, what depths, how long at each of the stations. Runs the
deck work. He and Troy are from Doug's lab at USC.

Bridget, smart MIT grad student, flirty, ambitious, possibly ruthless,
knows what she wants and don't get in her way. Trace metal specialist.
The iron woman.  

Troy,   tall, skinny, tired after months of setting logistics and
responsibility of all the gear getting to a third world location.  Quiet,
needs rest. 

Ying, Chinese national, very private, quiet, one can imagine her pumping
out the research. 

Juliet, coquettish, beautiful, batting eyes type. But god is she smart.

Day 2 brings more lab equipment setups, I assembled a large volume air
sampling station that we'll use to collect freeborn atmospheric iron
samples to spike the productivity experiments. Continued to install braces
on all equipment, tying everything down.  

I ask, "what are we expecting?"

They smile at the newbie volunteer, who never has seen the mountain of
water pour over the side of the ship,…

 "Just wait" they say...

#25 - ALASKA FANTASTIC

I found it on the sea." - Alaine Gerbault M/V Europa 59’ 14” N 135’ 26” W 8/19/01 15:35 ship time (GMT-9) “Alaska is the largest town in the north” as the saying goes, and we’ve been experiencing that notion in a profound way.  A stay of any length in one of these southeast villages results in small acquaintances, conversations with particular folks, interesting connections, and then you run into the same folks later in the day, in another context. Heddy, the rental car lady in Skagway comes by the boat in Haines “Saw your boat and thought it must be you guys!”; the bike & hiking store guy runs into you at the bar that night. Maybe it’s that people remember your new face when there are only 700 of them in the town, but any anonymity one banks on is a fantasy.  We have been socializing in the upper towns of Skagway and Haines for the past few days.  Jess, our waitress yells “Hello Dave & ...

It’s the 19th century. You’re a young man seeking adventure and a test of your manhood. You decide to sign up on a ship to see exotic foreign lands. You take the trip to the coast. You find a big coastal town and you walk through the docks admiring the ships. Finally, you spot one that you like. You walk on deck and a tall man dressed in black coat confronts you. It’s the captain. “What do you want lad?” “I want to sign on board sir,” you say. He looks you up and down, and says “Aye. But first I need to give you a test.” You’re not worried. You were expecting this and, in fact, hoping for it. You want to show the captain what you can do. After all, you were always the strongest out of all your friends.
