Shipmates,
I have had several requests from members of the science party that
concerns possible/potential contamination of their sampling (water/air).
#1 It is extremely important that the ctd area remain free of cigarette
smoke and other fumes/contaminants anytime there is science activity
in the vicinity of the forward hangar. As you know smoke and fumes and
such can get carried on the wind even if you are not directly in the
vicinity of the ctd area. This can and will contaminate and compromise
the samples and must be avoided at all costs.
Because of this I must insist that all cigarette smoking be done on
the port side of the ship. While a number of the crew, myself included,
use the forward hangar and adjacent areas as a lounge of sorts, we must
all keep in mind that it is first and foremost a science space and as
such the needs of science take precedence.
#2 There are a number of sensors and collectors on the forward end of the
02 deck that are being used to measure and collect atmospheric samples.
Any smoking or painting, etc., in this area or forward of this area
(the bow) will compromise the research. Please refrain from smoking,
painting, or otherwise contaminating the air in or around that area.
I know that this may present somewhat of an inconvenience to some of
you but the inconvenience is outweighed by the importance of the the
research that we are doing. Anyone smoking etc. in these areas will be
asked to relocate by either me or any member of the science party. Thanks
for your cooperation and understanding,
Captain
